James Wheeler “Buddy” Davis, 92, of Hopeful died Tuesday, June 19, 2018 at his residence in Hopeful.

Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m., Thursday, June 21 at Hopeful Baptist Church with interment in the church cemetery. Reverend Clay Cloud and Reverend Ron McCaskill will officiate.

A native of Mitchell County, Mr. Davis served in the United States Army during WWII and was stationed in the Philippines and Japan. Prior to serving in the Army, he attended Georgia Southwestern College.

He played professional baseball with the St. Louis Cardinals before an injury to his pitching arm ended his career. He returned to Mitchell County to begin his career in farming and agribusiness. The Davis Farm was recognized as a Centennial Farm by Governor Zell Miller in 1996 at the Georgia National Fair in Perry. The Davis Farm was chosen as a site for the 21st Annual Celebrity Quail Hunt and is home to L&L Hunting Preserve since 2006.

Mr. Davis was a lifetime member of Hopeful Baptist Church and served as Church secretary. He was elected to the Board of Deacons in 1961 and served as Chairman of the Deacons for two terms.

Mr. Davis was a sports enthusiast and enjoyed hunting, baseball, and basketball. He was elected to membership of the charter class of the Mitchell County Sports Hall of Fame in 2000. He coached a winning women’s softball team, The Hopeful Shamrocks, from 1980-1985. He was very active in this community and was elected to the Mitchell County Commission in 1984-1994 and was Chairperson of the Commission for eight years.

He is preceded in death by his mother and father, Madge and Ivey Davis, his sister, Martha Thigpen, his brothers, Lynn Davis, Jeff Davis, and Stanley Davis.

He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Gloria Bostick Davis of Hopeful; daughters, Dianne Davis of Albany and Janet Lambert (Jeff) of Tallahassee, FL; granddaughters, Lauren Bryant (Jeff) of Blakely, GA and Leigh Lambert of Tallahassee, FL; great grandson, Ivey Bryant of Blakely, GA. He was blessed to have loving caregivers, Susie Williams, Lacresha Miller, and Marilyn Richardson.

Visitation will be from 10 -11 a.m., Thursday, before services, at Hopeful Baptist Church.
